Who Will Lead? Identifying, Inspiring, and Supporting the Next Generation of Police Leaders Monday, September 23 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. David L. Lawrence Convention Center Meeting Room: 301-302 The U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) and the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) are leading an exciting initiative designed to leverage the incredible talent at our nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) to address critical staffing shortages and contribute to a modern law enforcement workforce that is representative of communities served. While HBCUs will serve as primary testing grounds for initiative development, the resulting strategies and resources will be shared broadly with police agencies and communities across the nation. |
Help! Protecting the Lives of People with Disabilities
Tuesday, September 24 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. David L. Lawrence Convention Center Meeting Room: 303-305 History has shown that people with disabilities are disproportionately affected by disasters because their needs are often overlooked or completely disregarded. To ensure that individuals with disabilities do not experience these types of injustices during future catastrophes, emergency plans must be intentional and specific as they acknowledge and address the difficulties experienced by this population. In this presentation, participants will learn: • The importance of a comprehensive all-hazard, all-risk assessment. • ADA sanctions that may apply for failing to include impacted communities. • Past failures and how they might have been avoided. • How to prepare an Emergency Evacuation Plan that complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act and protects the lives of people with disabilities in their community. • Requirements for transportation, emergency shelters, emergency egress routes, and accommodations for service animals will be covered that will save the lives of city and county residents, including individuals with mobility, visual, hearing, and cognitive impairments, as well as people whose survival requires medical equipment. • Attendees will also learn about questions that can and cannot be asked of people with disabilities and about politically correct disability-related terminology. Presented by Kristi Avalos and Thomas Wieczorek. |
